Cavaliers are lively and curious. They love to run to see other
animals, people and to simply chase a butterfly or squirrel.
Remember, they are a spaniel which comes from the hunting family. You will not be able to trust your new
puppy to stay in his yard on his own. You will need to provide
a safe place for your new family member to play and run outside.
ALWAYS keep your Cavalier in a fenced in area or on a leash.
Do
not let your new family member become a statistic.

Cages
 |
We recommend a "safe haven" for your dog.
This is often a cage. It should be just large enough for the dog to turn
around. Cages should have at least 2 sides covered to provide privacy.
If yours is all wire, cloth can be spread over the top and 2 sides
easily. The dog will run to a cage for protection if a child is too rough
or when Play Time is over.

Electric Fence
 |
This is not my favorite method, but electronic fences are often effective if you don't wish to
or can't construct a
physical fence due to housing regulations within a development. But be careful not to use the shock collars during
thunderstorms! In addition, make sure the fence is set up by a
professional who knows the proper voltage to use for the size of your
dog. These can be very dangerous if not used properly.
Some dogs learn that the shock is momentary and the fence becomes
ineffective , therefore it is important to begin training your dog how
to use this device from the beginning. This may help alleviate
problems. . Multiple shock probes added to electric collars can burn
your dog if it is raining. |

Our
Recommendation:
A wooden privacy fence prevents other
animals from getting in, and your animals from getting out.
This
is the very best solution to unfettered exercise in a protected area.
Dog runs can
expose
your dog to being attacked by another animal, with no chance to escape,
not to mention minimal exercise.
A fence also helps contain pesticides that neighbors might spray on
their lawn and gardens, as well as keeping delicious trash from blowing into
your yard. A good fence is a worthwhile investment on many levels. You'll have piece of mind,
a cleaner backyard, and a safer place to live. |
